So what's the difference between coaching and mentoring?

Coaching
  • Focuses on both organisational and individual goals and addresses workplace performance
  • Uses questions and feedback to facilitate the coachee’s thinking and practical learning
  • Personal issues may be discussed but the emphasis is the impact of them on their work performance
  • Impartial, focussed on improvement in behaviour

Mentoring
  • A process to support and help develop knowledge, skills, thinking and behaviours
  • Focuses on the person, their career and support for individual growth and maturity
  • Passing on personal experience
  • Provides guidance, advice, recommendations, experience, knowledge and wisdom. The mentee can choose what they do
  • A relationship for encouragement, advice, and befriending. Biased in favour of the mentee
